Wikipedia’s definition of Internet marketing is “the practice of selling a product or service over the internet via a medium, such as a website, an email server, or a network of computers.” Sounds simple enough doesn’t it? Well in reality it’s not. Wikipedia defines “Internet marketing” as: “The practice of marketing a product or service over the internet through a digital network like the internet. Internet marketing can be subdivided into online marketing, online advertising, and e-marketing.”

So what is the “internet marketing” that Wikipedia refers to? This subject is so vast, it would probably make a small book dedicated to it with a ton of detail and illustrations. For our purposes we will focus on two main areas of internet marketing. These areas are Pay-per-click (PPC) and SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Let’s start with PPC. In the simplest form this is where you bid on a keyword or phrase and if your bids get selected then you are charged a fee based on the search volume that these keywords bring. So, let’s assume that we want to sell books to our local bookstore. If we used our book search engine and found two books that met our criteria, then we could bid on those keywords and our ad would show up for the second keyword or phrase, thus creating a PPC campaign. If our PPC campaign was clicked on, then we would be charged for the click.

The next area of focus is SEO. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of optimizing the web based on search terms or phrases. SEO can be implemented internally by using internal tools and applications, or you can outsource this work to a company who specializes in this. As stated above, search engines play such a large part in determining the outcome of any SEO campaign. That is why it is so important to have someone who understands the ins and outs of SEO take a look at your website and ensure that you are getting the most bang for your buck.

Another area of focus is viral marketing. Viral marketing is when you create content that is attractive to those who are looking for the product or service that you have to offer. To make your internet marketing tool work, you must find a way to gain virility, which means gaining enough awareness within a targeted niche to allow for a significant amount of visitors. So let’s say you are selling books and you found a great deal on Amazon, you will want to find ways to get your books out there to those who need them.

And finally, we have landing pages. These are the actual web pages that potential customers land on after they have clicked on your advertisement. You want to make sure that you are properly optimizing your landing page. By following the information above, you will soon be an expert on internet marketing.
